We began testing water quality in February 2021 after consultation with each sub catchment group to gain a better understanding of water quality over the whole region as testing done by Waikato Regional Council (WRC) was limited.

24 sites were selected across eight catchments (three sites per catchment). Water samples were taken to determine levels of nitrates, phosphorus, E.coli and water clarity.

We test quarterly sampling in February, May, August, November each year with WRC sampling monthly.

Nine more sample sites were added in 2022.

The three West Coast catchment groups; Marokopa Community, South Kawhia Harbour Care, North Kawhia Harbour Care selected 12 sites early in 2022 and began testing in May 2022.

In August 2023 the number of testing sites has been reduced in the sub-catchment areas where we have collected three years' worth of data, this is due to a reduction in MPI funding and the rising costs of water quality testing. The three Coast catchments will continue testing all sites until we have three years of data.
